St Peter's Swimming Club Training Squads

Our squad programmes cater for
junior swimmers through to performance swimmers

Our main focus is on technique, skill perfection and long term athlete development. The squad programmes cater for junior swimmers through to performance swimmers who have shown the potential and desire to achieve at a high level.

STP Development Squad

This is the first group out of Learn to Swim, they will be starting a new chapter of their swimming journey.

COACHES: Zach Taylor, Paige Steen

  • Sessions range from 45 mins - 1 hour

  • Swimmers are encouraged to attend 1-3 sessions per week

What will your swimmer be learning?

  • Continuing to develop all four strokes
  • Increasing the volume of swimming, whilst maintaining a high quality of technical skill.
  • Learning to be fast in the water while having FUN!
  • Working toward: Competing at Club Nights, Waikato Junior Championships and Zonal Junior Championships

Regional Development Squad

This is the second competitive squad.

Coaches: Alastair Johnson, Paige Steen

  • Each session runs from 1 hour – 1.5 hours

  • Swimmers are encouraged to attend at least 3 - 4 sessions per week, with a mixture of morning and evening sessions

What will your swimmer be learning?

  • Introduction to training: using the pace clock, and sets and repetition, in a fun and social environment
  • Continual development and refining of all four strokes
  • Basic dry land training, pre pool activation, body weight exercises, mobility exercises.
  • Racing at club night, local and regional swim meets
  • Working towards, Waikato Junior Championships, Zonal Junior Championships, selection to Waikato Regional Squads

Regional Performance Squad

Coach: Paige Steen, Alastair Johnson

  • Swimmers are encouraged to attend 4 - 5 sessions per week, which run from 1 - 2 hours, with a mixture of morning and evening sessions

What will your swimmer be learning?

  • Further introduction to training. Sets and repetitions start to become a focus
  • Continual development and refining of all four strokes under pressure
  • Basic dry land training, pre pool activation, body weight exercise, mobility exercises
  • Racing at club nights, local and regional swim meets, and Zonal Junior Championships
  • Working towards top 8 at Zonal Junior Championships, qualifying for Division II, selection to Waikato Regional Squads

National Silver Squad

This is the fourth level in the competitive programme, with pool sessions lasting 1.5 - 2 hours, plus two gym sessions per week.

Coaches: Zach Taylor, Paige Steen

  • Swimmers are expected to reach pre-set targets that have been discussed with the Swimmer, Parent(s) and Coach and agreed on by all parties

What will your athlete be learning?

  • Further introduction to training. Sets, repetitions, heart rate, stroke rate, become more important for self-management and improvement
  • Goal setting
  • More advanced dry land training, pre pool activation, post pool recovery, introduction to group strength and conditioning sessions
  • Racing at local, inter-regional and national swim meets
  • Working towards SNZ National Age Group Championships, SNZ Division II Championships, selection to Waikato Regional Squads

National Gold Squad

This is the fifth level and pool sessions last 1.5 - 2 hours, plus 2 - 3 gym sessions per week.

Coach: Zach Taylor

  • Swimmers are expected to reach a pre-set target that has been discussed with the Swimmer, Parent(s) and Coach and agreed on by all parties

What will your athlete be learning?

  • Further introduction to training. Sets, repetitions, heart rate, stroke rates and race tactics become more important for self-management and improvement.
  • Goal setting
  • More advanced dry land training, pre pool activation, post pool recovery, individual strength and conditioning programmes
  • Racing at local, inter-regional and national swim meets
  • Working towards SNZ National Age Group Championships, Open Nationals, selection to Waikato Regional Squads
